Rain Chain FAQ

Answers to our most frequently asked Rain Chain questions

DO YOU OFFER CUSTOM LENGTH RAIN CHAINS?

We do not offer custom length rain chains. Our rain chains are standard 8.5 ft. lengths of which 8 ft. is the length of the rain chain and the gutter clip is slightly more than 5”.  In case a longer length is necessary for your application we offer 3 ft. extensions in the following 4 styles:

  1. Pure Copper Hammered Cup Rain Chain
  2. Pure Copper Ring Rain Chain
  3. Pure Copper Lotus Rain Chain
  4. Pure Copper Cascading Leaves Rain Chain

I WANT TO LENGTHEN MY CHAIN OVER THE STANDARD 8.5 FEET. CAN I CONNECT TWO RAIN CHAINS TOGETHER?

Yes, you can easily connect two or more rain chains together to meet the desired length. To connect them we recommend you purchase our round connector links, available in: Pure CopperAluminum Black, and Mill Finish Aluminum.

You can also easily shorten or lengthen the rain chain with a pair of pliers and connector rings.

HOW DO I INSTALL A RAIN CHAIN?

Our rain chains fit easily into a standard gutter opening and can be installed with the help of our triangular gutter clip (or cross bar on link-style rain chains) without major tools.

We highly recommend installation with the Monarch Rain Chains Gutter Adapters and/or Adapter Kits available on our accessories page.  We highly encourage you to measure your gutters prior to purchase to insure proper sizing.

HOW DO I ATTACH THE RAIN CHAIN TO THE GUTTER ADAPTOR?

First, remove the top installation clip that is attached to your rain chain; a triangular gutter clip for cup-style or cross bar on link-style rain chains. Slide the bolt through the first hole of the gutter adapter, and then through the link at the top of your rain chain. Slide the bolt through the second hole, and tighten both nuts.

CAN I INSTALL A RAIN CHAIN WITHOUT GUTTERS?

We strongly recommend and encourage that any installation without gutters be completed by your contractor. Please consult a local professional for this type of application.

HOW DO I ANCHOR MY RAIN CHAIN?

To prevent the rain chain from blowing in the wind, we recommend anchoring it to the ground with a weighted basin or stake.

PLEASE NOTE: it is imperative the length of the rain chain is not stretched; this can cause pressure on the links which may damage the rain chain.

Basins are available on our accessories page.
Black anchoring stakes can be found on our accessories page.
Brown anchoring stakes can be found on our accessories page.

IS THERE SPLASHING ASSOCIATED WITH A RAIN CHAIN?

There will always be splashing associated with a rain chain, as there are several variables that make up rain conditions.

In areas of heavy rainfall, we recommend purchasing a rain chain with an extra-large or large cup. Bottom openings of each cup size are important so there is less overflow of water from cup to cup. Cup measurements are included in product specifications.

For ring style rain chains, rain water running the length of the rain chain provides a sense of tranquility. As gravity pulls the water down the ring style rain chain, you will see slightly more splash.

HOW TO USE A RAIN CHAIN TO RECYCLE RAIN WATER?

As the rain water runs down the length of the rain chain to the ground, place a receptacle of your choice to collect the water. Some of our customers collect in large barrels, ground receptacles, or large containers for further re-use.

We offer a variety of rain chain basins to create a beautiful water feature. The nut and bolt at the bottom of the basin can be loosened so that the water drains out. Basins are available on our accessories page.

DO WINTER CONDITIONS AFFECT MY RAIN CHAIN?

Yes. Prior to installation, we suggest and recommend that you consider potential weight build-up on each cup. Icicles, snow, and additional ice build-up can add significant weight to your rain chain.

If you live in areas of heavy snow or icicle build-up, we suggest that you consider these factors before leaving your rain chain installed during the winter months.

We, also, recommend and strongly urge you to strengthen your gutters before installing the rain chain. Please consult your contractor or local professional for suggestions on strengthening gutters.
